This is an example where I used a straight red background in order to then make the red transparent.   The first one shows the image with the red background and no transparency.   The second shows the transparency.

To make a transparency, make the background a plain color that is not used in the image itself.   Then, when you are saving it as a gif, choose the background color as the color that should be transparent.
